To prevent further water damage
- First, determine
what is
causing the flooding and shut off the
source
- Call your insurance company
- Water leaks can happen
anywhere in the house, however, the mostly occur in the kitchen,
bathroom, and laundry room
- Make sure all electrical
appliances are unplugged
- Record damage with photos
or a
video camera
- Remove
water; use a wet-vacuum
if possible
- Remove
furniture, area rugs,
books, newspapers, and other
household furnishings off of the wet carpet
- Turn
the air on and any
overhead fans
- If valuable papers have been
soaked, place
in freezer

Here are
some preventative ways to avoid floods and loss of property
- Check
your dishwasher connections, refrigerator
water filter, and water lines connecting
sinks, showers, and toilets; looking
for
discoloration, wetness, or mineral deposits around the connections
- If you see a buckling of
dry-wall or discoloration
or if areas smell moldy there is definitely a
leak.
- In Arizona, because we have no
basements and very few drains, water heaters
are a main source of water
intrusion.
- Hot water heaters should
be
checked for rusted areas near the bottom and
any signs of water leak.
- Call a qualified plumbing
contractor to verify.
- The A/C System: during
start-up
inspection make sure a qualified contractor checks to see that the
condensation
pan drain line is not obstructed
- Sprinkler
heads: check for
discoloration around the heads call a qualified
contractor if you
detect a leak, even if it is small
- Keep area around the house
free
from debris, wood, and other
moisture holding materials
